Karwar: Pourakarmikas all over the district who were staging a protest in the city on Monday, were detained by the police when section 144 of CrPC was enforced for a day as ordered by the Taluk administration prohibiting demonstrations in a 200 metre radius of the DC office.

The police took them to Guru Bhavan and released them later. The order of tahsildar G N Naik had surprised the protesters as it was not issued in advance, but on the day of the protest.

The police detained the protesters led by CITU Uttara Kannada district general secretary Yamuna Gaonkar when they had demanded that any district level officer must come to the spot to redress their grievances.
