Bhatkal: Bunder’s jetty partially collapses; Police restrict vehicular movement, Fishermen raise alarm

Bhatkal: A portion of the jetty at the Mavinkurve Bunder in Bhatkal, spanning nearly 100 to 150 meters, has reportedly collapsed, triggering concern among the local fishing community.

The jetty, which was constructed around 4–5 years ago using cement concrete without any metal reinforcements, is believed to have weakened at the base, leading to the collapse. Large cracks have developed across the concrete surface, making it dangerous for people to walk over, especially during nighttime when visibility is low. Fisherwomen who continue selling fish on the jetty until 9–10 p.m. and the general public visiting the area are now at considerable risk.

Authorities have placed red stones as barriers and restricted vehicle movement in the area. While the police have installed barricades at certain spots, public movement on the weakened jetty continues, raising safety concerns. With the monsoon season expected to begin within the next month and a half, the threat of further collapse looms large.

Fishermen are urging immediate action from authorities, especially since Bhatkal’s MLA Mankal Vaidya also serves as the Minister of Fisheries and Ports. They demand swift intervention and repair work before the situation worsens.

Historical Significance and Current Usage

The Mavinkurve Port (Bunder) was originally constructed in 1968–69 and inaugurated by the then Chief Minister, Late S. Nijalingappa. It was a hub of marine activity before other ports like Tenginagundi and Alvekodi came into existence. Presently, around 25–30 parsian boats and over 50 fishing boats operate from this port, making it a vital center for the region’s fishing trade. The collapse has already begun affecting fish marketing and daily activities at the port.

Minister Assures Quick Action

Reacting to the incident, Minister Mankal Vaidya stated that upon learning about the jetty collapse, he immediately directed the Director of the Ports and Fisheries Department to inspect the site. A cost estimate for the repair has been prepared, and the required funds will be released soon, he assured.
