Uttara Kannada: 657 held in 5 years for Cattle smuggling; Hindus and Muslims both involved

Bhatkal: Over the past five years, Uttara Kannada district has witnessed 252 cases related to cattle theft and smuggling, resulting in the arrest of 657 individuals, according to data released by the district police. Among those arrested, Muslims form the majority, followed by Hindus.

Between 2020 and April 18, 2025, a total of 469 Muslims and 190 Hindus were arrested in connection with cattle-related offenses in the district. Police also seized 1,221 animals during this period, including camels — an unusual addition in such cases.

Out of the total cases, 193 were related to cattle transportation and 56 involved the illegal transport of beef. Authorities also confiscated 16,933 kilograms of beef from different parts of the district since 2020.

Camels were found to be smuggled into the district in 2022 and 2024, with six and five camels seized in those respective years.

Since M. Narayan took charge as Superintendent of Police in Uttara Kannada, efforts have intensified to curb cattle smuggling. During his tenure, 9 cattle theft and 11 smuggling cases were registered, leading to the arrest of one suspect and recovery of two stolen animals.

In addition, police under his leadership acted on 27 illegal cattle transport cases and 5 beef transport cases, arresting 90 individuals — 49 Muslims and 41 Hindus. They also rescued 250 animals and seized 380 kilograms of beef.
