
Bhatkal: In a bold daylight incident, two miscreants who snatched a gold chain from a woman walking along the National Highway in Murdeshwar were arrested within 24 hours by the police. The stolen chain, the two-wheeler used in the crime, and two mobile phones were also recovered.
The incident occurred on April 17 around 1:30 PM, when 51-year-old fish vendor Nagamma Sukra Moger was walking home near Bastimakki, Murdeshwar, after getting off a bus. Two youths on a motorcycle suddenly approached her. The pillion rider suddenly grabbed the 26-gram gold mangalsutra from around her neck and fled the scene with his accomplice.
The stolen gold chain is valued at ₹2.20 lakh.
As soon as the incident was reported, the police swung into action. Under the guidance of Uttara Kannada SP M. Narayan (IPS), Additional SPs Krishnamurthy and Jagadish M., and Bhatkal DySP Mahesh M., a special team was formed, led by Murdeshwar Inspector Santosh Kaikini and PSI Hanumant Biradar. According to sources, the police apprehended the accused the very next day in Sirsi and recovered the stolen chain.
The arrested accused have been identified as Mahesh Parsappa Kuri (26), a resident of Lakshmeshwar in Gadag district, and Manikanta Hanumant Sharahatti (22), a resident of Anand Nagar, Hubballi.
Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police M. Narayan praised the swift action of the officers and personnel involved in cracking the case and appreciated their efforts.
