Karwar: Excise Police raided a lorry at Majali checkpost in Karwar taluk on Thursday early morning and seized Goan liquor that was being illegally transported along with liquor manufactured in Karnataka. The total worth of the liquor seized is Rs 1.17 crore.
As many as 4,800 bottles (3,681 litres) of expensive liquor manufactured by known companies in Karnataka were being transported to State Beverages Corporation Ltd in Bengaluru in 400 boxes. Along with it, 108 bottles (in nine boxes) of Goan liquor worth Rs 29,000 was being transported illegally.
On a tip-off, excise officials led by Department Deputy Commissioner Vanajakshi M raided the lorry at around 2:00 am. Lorry driver Narasimharaju L D from Bengaluru was arrested. Liquor and other materials worth Rs 1.37 crore including the lorry worth Rs 19.5 lakh used for transporting the liquor were seized.
Another case
In another case, excise officials also seized Goan liquor worth Rs 8,630 being transported in a car, at Majali checkpost at around 3:30 am. The liquor and car worth Rs 12 lakh were seized.
