New Delhi: Weeks of nationwide student protests over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations culminated on Saturday with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stepping down from office. The resignation marks a significant turning point in the agitation that has gathered momentum across the country, particularly at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where demonstrators led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) had intensified their campaign demanding his removal.
The protests were triggered by allegations of question paper leaks, examination irregularities and growing concerns over the credibility of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) and other competitive examinations. Student groups argued that repeated controversies had eroded confidence in the country's examination system, making the minister’s resignation one of their principal demands.
Protesters and leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party described Pradhan’s resignation as a major victory for the student movement, while insisting that the larger campaign for reforms in the examination system would continue.
Pradhan explains his decision
In his resignation statement and subsequent social media post, Pradhan said he had never tried to evade responsibility during the controversy. He maintained that he did not want the prolonged dispute to further affect students or allow what he termed "anti-national elements" to exploit the situation. With that in mind, he said, he had decided to relinquish his ministerial responsibilities.
How the protests gathered momentum
Public outrage initially surfaced online before spreading to university campuses and protest sites across the country. Demonstrations at Jantar Mantar became the focal point of the movement as students demanded accountability for the alleged examination irregularities, action against those responsible and comprehensive reforms to restore trust in the system.
The agitation drew wider national attention following police action against demonstrators, including lathi-charge, use of tear gas and the detention of several protesters. The movement gained further visibility after environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk launched a prolonged hunger strike in support of education reforms.
Role of the Cockroach Janata Party
The Cockroach Janata Party, which emerged as one of the prominent faces of the protest movement, consistently maintained that the agitation would continue until the Union Education Minister resigned.
Its founder, Abhijeet Dipke, repeatedly stated during interactions with government representatives that Pradhan's resignation was essential if the Centre wished to resolve the crisis. According to Dipke, there could be no compromise on that demand.
The party also organised an online signature campaign seeking accountability for the alleged NEET paper leak and calling for the minister's removal. The campaign was linked with the ongoing demonstrations at Jantar Mantar and the wider "Sansad Chalo" mobilisation.
CJP's response after the resignation
Reacting shortly after the announcement, Abhijeet Dipke declared, "The world bows only before those who make it bow," describing the resignation as a victory for democratic protest.
In a later video message posted on social media, he asserted that the movement would not end with the resignation of a single minister. He said the objective remained comprehensive reforms in India's examination system, greater transparency and stronger accountability mechanisms.
Dipke had earlier disclosed that he was suffering from typhoid but insisted that he would continue participating in the protests until the minister stepped down.
Sonam Wangchuk's contribution
Activist Sonam Wangchuk also became a prominent face of the campaign after undertaking a prolonged hunger strike in support of education reforms. Although he later ended the fast, protest leaders maintained that the movement would continue until broader structural changes were introduced in the country's examination process.

While Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation is being viewed by demonstrators as a major milestone, student organisations and CJP leaders have made it clear that their movement is far from over. They say their demands extend beyond the resignation of one minister and include transparent examination reforms, strict action against those responsible for paper leaks and the establishment of a robust system capable of preventing similar controversies in the future.
