Mangaluru: Police have arrested a man and a woman in connection to the theft of Rs 18 lakhs recently at builder Narasimha Rao's house in Konchady on June 22.
The accused are Ambanna Basappa Jadar alias Ambarish (25) and Rashida alias Kaji (23), both from Navalgunda of Dharwad district.
The police have recovered Rs silver and gold ornaments worth Rs. 9700 bought from the robbed money and 17.38 lakhs in cash.
Addressing a press meet at his office here on Friday July 8, police commissioner Chandra Sekhar said that the CCTV images revealed that the robbery was committed by a man and a woman who had been hired by the builder a few days ago. They were assisted by at least four others.
With the help of CCTV images, a police team led by ACP Udaya Nayak investigated the case and arrested the accused from Kulai here on July 8, said the police commissioner.
As per the sources, Builder Narasimha Rao had placed an advertisement in a daily on June 22 seeking to hire a maid and a watchman. A man claiming as Shiva and woman Jyoti came to builder's house seeking employment. They were hired without any background check. The builder even constructed an outhouse for them in his compound.
On Saturday evening, at around 4.30 pm, Rao and his family had gone to visit a relative's house. Taking advantage of the situation, Shiva and Jyoti broke into the house with four other persons including a woman around 6.15 pm. The thieves first burnt down the door of the house and then broke it open with sharp tools and decamped with Rs. 18 lakh cash.
He urged the public to be careful about who they hire for domestic work and to check the person's background by obtaining photo identity proof such as Aadhaar card and to ensure that they are not involved in any case, police verification should be done.
CCTVs should be installed in houses as well as commercial buildings for security, he added.
The commissioner thanked the Navulgunda police for assisting the Mangaluru police in the investigation and also appreciated the investigation team headed by ACP Udaya Nayak, comprising Kavoor inspector Nataraj, SI Umesh and others and rewarded them with commendation certificates.
