Udupi: Absconding man arrested after 12 years on charges of marrying twice

Udupi: A man was arrested by the Kaup police for absconding after marrying for the second time without informing about his first marriage.

The accused, identified as Hafiz Rehman (43) was arrested at Muththinakoppa in Chikkamagaluru district on 13th August, Sunday night. Hafiz was absconding for 12 years.

According to sources, a case of cheating and threatening was registered against him 12 years ago in 2005. However, he had obtained a bail and was absconding since then. Udupi district and sessions court had issued a warrant against him.

Kaup police, who were on a lookout for him, found Hafiz running a canteen in Muththinakoppa and arrested him. The court has ordered for his judicial custody for 14 days. The search for his brokers Nasir and two others who helped him is still on.

Hafiz, with the help of Udupi resident Gafoor, Davanagere resident Nasir Khan and Kundapur resident Hussain had married Dilshad, a resident of Kaup keeping his earlier marriage a secret. Upon knowing about truth, Dilshad had filed a complaint against him at Kaup police station.

PSI Lakshman, staff Sudhakar Bhandari and Sandesh Bhandari from Kaup police station took part in the operation.
