Steps to prevent spread of H1N1, dengue in Uttara Kannada

Sirsi: Various departments like Health, Education, Agriculture and Rural Development and other Urban Local Bodies have decided to take precautionary measures to prevent H1N1 and dengue in the taluk.

The unanimous decision was taken at a meeting presided by Assistant Commissioner K Raju Mogaveer, at Sirsi, following detection of seven H1N1 cases in the taluk over past four months, in which four have died.

Stagnant Water

Addressing the meeting, Dr H F Ingale said, stagnant water, unused vessels, at backyards of house and dustbins must be avoided by everyone as part of precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the diseases.

“Mosquito production can be prevented by growing gambusia (mosquito) fish and frog fish in agriculture ponds. Plastics should be covered on Tyres stored at bus depots and steps to remove stagnant water must be taken. Health department is creating awareness regarding the same, and all other departments must co-operate with it,”he requested.

Ayurvedic medicines are useful to increase immunity. Neem oil should be applied to whole body to control mosquito bites. Coconut oil, camphor mixture, onion and garlic can also be used to prevent mosquitoes, Dr Vijayalaxmi Puranik informed.

Providing information about H1N1, Narendra Pawar said, if the symptoms like acute fever, excessive vomiting, migraine pain, jaundice, throat and respiratory problems are detected, one should immediately consult the doctor. Since H1N1 is a congenital disease, common man should use napkin while sneezing. The affected person must keep himself away from the group and wash hands before using materials. Only boiled water should be used, balanced diet taken and those who take care of patients should use face mask, he added.

He informed that, 29 H1N1 cases has been identified in the district this time, of which eight people have died. Taluk Health Officer Dr Annapurna Vastrad, Municipal Commissioner Mahendrakumar, Lions Club President Jyothi Bhat were present on occasion.
