Karwar: In addition to the INS Chapal warship museum at Ravindranath Tagore beach, Karwar is going to get its second warship museum soon. After it is decommissioned from service, the Karnataka government plans on getting the Tupolev-142M aircraft.

The aircraft will be installed next to the INS Chapel once it is turned into a museum. In order to get the aircraft, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to Defence Minister Arun Jaitley asking him for the possession of the aircraft.

If the aircraft is handed by the Union Government then it is likely that the tourism in the state would get a nice boost. The Tupoley-142M was used for antisubmarine warfare. It is the fastest aircraft in its size criteria.

Siddaramaiah has said in his letter to Jaitley: “For the Sea Bird project (Karwar Naval Base), the Uttara Kannada district administration handed over 11,334 acres of land to navy. Since the naval base is near Karwar city, the maintenance and monitoring of Tupolev-142M craft will be easier.”

He further added, “This would act as an inspiration to the youths to join Indian Navy.”
