Karwar: The people who lost their land for Seabird Naval Base Project have not received any compensation from the Defense Ministry, said Seabird Naval Base Project Land-losers Association.
Leader of the Association, Gajana Naik, told reporters on Tuesday that many villagers lost their land as well as home for the project. But till date, no compensation has been given. Even the Supreme Court had ordered to give Rs 11,500 per gunta with interest as compensation to land-losers, but till date the Defence Ministry has not released the same.
He said, “Recently, there was a news that Rs 11,500 crore funds have been released to give compensation and for other works. But till date, we have not received anything.” If the ministry fails to give compensation as early as possible, a protest will be staged against the authorities, he warned.
“The Defense Department has recently agreed to open an office of the Defence Estate Officer at Karwar DC office to speed up the relief work. We request the officials to set up the office as soon as possible,” he further added.
