MP moots Israeli tech to make sea water potable

Karwar: MP Ananthkumar Hedge has asked the Zilla Panchayat (ZP) to submit convert sea water into portable water using Israeli technology.

Reviewing the progress of various schemes at the district level co-ordination and supervision committee meeting held here on Tuesday, Hegde stated that Rs 15 lakh was sufficient to adapt Israeli technology to covert 20,000 litres of sea water into potable water daily, while sewage water can also be treated.

ZP Chief Executive Officer Chandrashekar Nayak noted that a proposal seeking Rs 10 crore special grants has been submitted to install Chennai modal plant to convert sea water into portable water, to solve drinking water problems in coastal areas.

Hedge also asked officials to ensure proper drinking water supply during summer at 754 villages in the district, where drinking water problems had been identified.

Need for training

He stressed the need to provide training under NRLM, keeping opportunities in the district and skills of youth in view.

Officials informed the meeting that the target was to cover 712 beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Avas Yojana, while the contruction of 304 houses was completed.

Out of 4,652 Gouri community families in four taluks, 209 families still lacked toilets. Toilets construction for 152 families in Mundgod taluk was pending, officials said.
