Karwar: The district administration has decided to shift the city’s Mayuraverma Vedike at the beach side for widening the Mangaluru-Panaji national highway.
The Vedike on the Ravindranath Tagore beach is the only large podium in the city, and a number of public and private events, including Karavali Utsavs, are held on it.
The authorities have notified an additional land for the ongoing four-laning of the road and the Vedike falls within the limits. Assistant executive engineer R P Naik said that the Vedike had been renovated at a cost of Rs 25 lakh in 2008. Since then, Karavali Utsavs have been organised there.
The roof, iron pillars and other parts of the Vedike will be removed and it will be reconstructed on the beach side. Additional Deputy Commissioner H Prasanna told reporters that the administration has written to IRB Constructions, the road construction company, to shift the Vedike. It would pay Rs 28 lakh to the company as shifting expenditure.
