Fall in Malaria cases in Uttar Kannada district

Karwar: The rate of malaria cases in the district was decreasing drastically since last 4-5 years.

According to the sources, between  January and May in 2017, only 14 malaria cases were reported in the district. While last year 18 cases were reported in Karwar alone, it had created terror among the people. But no case was fatal so far.

During 2015 as many as 64 cases were reported while in 2016, totally 60 malaria cases were identified. However, in the current year three cases have reported.

The spread of malaria was noted to high in Bagalkot, Gadag, Haveri, Kulaburgi, Yadgir, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts since 2004. During 2016, as many as 10,617 malaria cases were reported in the entire state. Out of them 6,409 cases were reported from Dakshina Kannada itself. Malaria is under control in Uttara Kannada district and people need not be panic, says malaria officer, Dr Ramesh Rao.

Precautionary measures have also been taken to check the contagious disease in the district. Asha activists had visited door to door in the disease prone areas last year and created awareness about cleanliness.

They also demonstrated how to kill the mosquito larvae which leads to spread the disease, he said.
