Kumta: In the wake of a massive landslide caused by heavy rainfall, three children lost their lives and about seven women sustained serious injuries on 11th June, Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Yateen Narayan Ambig (7 yrs), Bhavya Narayan Ambig (8 yrs), and Dhanush Manjunath Ambig who was just one year old.

Police and Fire and Emergency Service officials were deployed for rescue operations while the road was blocked for about eight hours. At least eight houses collapsed due to the mudslide and some residents were trapped under the debris.

Later, Uttar kannada Deputy Commissioner S S Nakul visited the spot and announced a compensation of Rs. 4 lakhs to the kin of each deceased and said that the government would bear the medical expenses of the injured.

The residents of the houses which were destroyed by the landslide were shifted to a rehabilitation centre.

The villagers showed their discontent by staging a protest. They staged a protest against the IRB Infrastructure Developers alleging that they have weakened the hills by undertaking the road-widening work without any safety or precautionary measures.
