Karwar: A high alert was issued in and outside the INS Kadamba naval base and along the National Highway 66 here in Karwar district on Thursday afternoon after three unidentified men reportedly entered the base through a breached wall on June 21st, Wednesday night.
The high alert has been issued around the Sea Bird project, Asia's most advanced naval base which is located at Alageri village near Ankola here.
Sources say, three unidentified men were spotted on CCTV on Wednesday night. They had entered into the base by jumping over a compound wall next to NH-66. The locals who saw them informed the officials that the men were acting suspiciously.
The efforts are being made to trace them and investigate about their identities and objectives.
According to the Navy, three trespassers were seen near the breach in the morning. "When security personnel went to apprehend them, they ran away. A thorough search was carried out, but no unauthorised person was found hiding in the area. Local police and a dog squad assisted in the search," said a Navy press release.
The police personnel have also kept a tight vigil security on national highway 66 too that passes through the naval base.
The INS Kadamba is the third largest Indian naval ship that was commissioned in 2005. The second phase was commenced in 2011. The naval base is equipped with a naval air station, naval armament depot, research facility and full-fledged naval ship repair yard.
