Karwar: Rainwater entered a house in Karwar city, forcing the family members to conduct the last rites of their loved one on the road.
Santosh Naik (35) died due to illness when he was returning to Karwar from Goa on Tuesday. His body could not be taken inside his house as it was completely flooded. The family kept the body in the mortuary on Tuesday. As water did not recede even on Wednesday, they had no other option but to keep the body in the water outside the house for the last rites.
Later, the body was cremated at Nandangadda crematorium.
Torrential rains lash U-K
Since the last two days, Uttara Kannada district has been receiving heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, which caused damage to properties in Karwar and other parts of the district. The district received 1,175.6 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours.
Honnavar taluk recorded the highest of 201.6 mm while Mundgod received the lowest of 17.6 mm, according to sources. The average rainfall this month so far is 106.9 mm across the district. Kumta taluk received 196.6 mm, Karwar 150.6 mm, Ankola 118.8 mm, Bhatkal 112.8 mm, Haliyal 27 mm, Siddapur 140.6 mm, Sirsi 71 mm, Joida 87.6 mm and Yellapur 51.4 mm rainfall. Inflow to dams has also been increased, thanks to good rainfall in the catchment areas.
Water-logging caused inconvenience to the residents of several areas, including Kalasawada, Port Colony and Teachers’ Colony.
Two mango trees fell on a house near Gindi temple at Pilley Wada. City Municipality Council officials said there was not much damage to the house. At Gurumath, a mango tree and three electricity poles fell on the road and a car.
