Farmer killed in a bear attack in Mundgod taluk

Karwar: A 28-year-old farmer was killed by sloth bear in front of his wife and son at Katur range forest in Ganadal area of Chalageri village in Mundgod taluk on 26th September, Tuesday evening.

The deceased, identified as Vittu Janu Toravar was a resident of Chalageri and he had gone to his farm at Ganadal near his village along with his wife and young son.

Police said that the victim was walking with a plastic cover on his head as it was raining when the bear attacked him. When he was walking ahead of his wife, he saw two small bears passing by when the mother bear came from behind and attacked him.

Hearing the screams of the victim’s wife, the bear ran away leaving Toravar in a blood. The wife took him to a nearby farmhouse after walking for almost half an hour. The people in the farmhouse helped her and called her relatives.

On Wednesday, he was buried at his village. The doctors, who examined his body, said the bear classed his abdomen and heavy bleeding caused his death.
