New Delhi: The Congress party on Wednesday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his silence over U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Accusing the BJP of politicising Operation Sindoor, the party said it would hold public rallies titled ‘Jai Hind Sabhas’ across states to seek accountability from the government.
At a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party reiterated demands made by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for an immediate all-party meeting chaired by the Prime Minister and the convening of a special session of Parliament.
AICC leader Jairam Ramesh criticised the BJP for attempting to brand the military operation as its own political achievement. “Operation Sindoor belongs to the armed forces and the nation, not any political party,” he said.
The CWC passed a resolution expressing deep concern over the lack of transparency regarding India’s retaliatory actions against Pakistan, calling the sudden end of such operations unclear and troubling. It described Trump’s claim of using trade pressure to mediate a ceasefire as “deeply problematic” and said the Indian government’s silence was “inexplicable and unacceptable.”
Reaffirming that Kashmir is strictly a bilateral issue, the Congress warned that the Modi government’s failure to rebut Trump’s claim had dangerously internationalised the matter. The resolution stated that this created “an unprecedented and dangerous hyphenation of India with Pakistan.”
The CWC also reprimanded party MP Shashi Tharoor for publicly praising Operation Sindoor and the ceasefire announcement, with Jairam Ramesh clarifying: “When Tharoor speaks, it does not reflect the view of the party.”
Rahul Gandhi is expected to address a press conference on Friday regarding the matter.
