Bhatkal: A half-hour blackout will be conducted in Bhatkal and Murdeshwar on Monday, May 12, from 7:30 PM to 8:00 PM as per the directive of the district administration. This blackout is being organized in the context of the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan, and is intended to simulate an emergency response situation.
Authorities have urged all residents to switch off lights in their homes, shops, and establishments during this period to ensure complete darkness. Streetlights will also be turned off, and all vehicular movement on public roads will be prohibited. People have been instructed to remain indoors and avoid coming out during the blackout.
Bhatkal DySP Mr. Mahesh has requested the cooperation of all residents of Bhatkal, Murdeshwar, and surrounding areas in observing this symbolic blackout as a form of preparedness and support.
It may be recalled that Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister G. Parameshwara recently emphasized the importance of enhancing security and awareness in coastal Karnataka, identifying Uttara Kannada as one of the sensitive districts after Bengaluru and Raichur. Mock drills have already been completed in those districts, and similar exercises are now taking place in Karwar and Bhatkal.
In Karwar, the mock drill will begin at 4:00 PM, with a blackout also scheduled from 7:30 PM to 8:00 PM — similar to the one in Bhatkal.
