Karwar: Environmentalists led by Shri Sonda Swarnavalli Mutt seer will br organizing an ‘Environment Convention’ on 25th June, Sunday in order to oppose the fifth and sixth unit of nuclear reactors of Kaiga nuclear plant at TMS auditorium in Yellapur town.
Addressing to reporters on Tuesday, Anant Hegde Ashisara who is an environmentalist said that there are a lot of bad effects of nuclear reactors. People around Kaiga have been suffering from cancer and other diseases after four nuclear reactors were set up.
He further said, “Another two reactors are planned at Kaiga and for this lakh of trees will be cut down to lay power lines and it will in turn affect the biodiversity of the thick forests of Western Ghats.”
“Therefore, environmentalists have come together to oppose the additional reactors at Kaiga. Some 4000-5000 people are expected to participate in the convention”, he said.
The cause is being supported by Sri Gangadharendra Saraswati swamiji of Sonda Swarnavalli Mutt, Ashisara added.
Many environmentalists including Nagesh Hegde, B M Kumaraswamy, scientist T V Ramachandra and others will participate in the convention.
