Karwar: Deputy Commissioner S S Nakul has directed Civic workers to segregate the garbage, while collecting them and hand over the segregate waste to solid waste disposal units.

Speaking at the training programme, organised by District Administration and City Development Cell, for civic staff of Karwar City Municipal Council and Ankola Town Municipal Council, on Tuesday, at Gurubhavan, he said from October, non-segregated waste will not be accepted by waste disposal units.

The non-segregated waste dumped at Shirwad and Ankola’s Bogribail unit have led to lot of health problems in surrounding localities. It needs nearly six months to separate the garbage as dry and wet waste. Hence, civic workers should collect garbage after separating it, he added.

“All civic workers of district are getting Provident Fund (PF) and Employees State Insurance(ESI) facilities. The training camps will be held across the district upto August 21. Civic workers should clarify their doubts regarding else face serious action for collecting unsegregated garbage,”Nakul warned the staff members.

Speaking on occasion, Vice President Leelabai Thanekar suggested the workers to take benefits from training camps and to work actively. DUDC Assistant Executive Engineer R P Naik said, already workshops and training camps were held in this regard and directions have been given to all local organisations to classify garbage.

“In Sirsi, fertilizers are manufactured by wet garbage and being sold by Garbage Processing Unit. This action will be expanded throughout the district in days to come. The tender process has been completed to distribute houses for civic workers under’Gruha Bhagya Scheme.”
