Karwar: Karwar-Ankola MLA Roopali Naik has stated that people of the district should join their hands together to help the people affected by the deluge in various parts of the district.
Proper facilities should be ensured to them at the rehabilitation centres and there is a need for taking up precautionary steps to avoid floods entering into villages in future, she added.
She noted this while speaking during a meeting of officials called to discuss the flood situation in the taluk, held at Taluk Panchayat office in the town on Wednesday.
She said, “We all are safe and leading a good life, however, the situation of people who were affected by the flood, lost their homes, crops, cattle and everything is worst and unimaginable”. Hence, it will not be enough if the officials work for formality and show the reports. They should execute works appropriately in all parts of the taluk to ensure that needed facilities will be given to the needy, she said.
The survey of flood-affected areas should be conducted properly. After inspecting the water-logging areas where water stagnates and reviewing the submersion of bridges, particular places should be identified
and a report should be prepared in terms to increase the heights of such bridges and roads, she said and added that such instances should not
be witnessed in the coming years.
She said, two hanging bridges which were connecting Dongri have washed away due to the floods. Fishing boat arrangements should be made to provide transportation facilities to the people there.
‘Pay rent charges’
Immediate measures should be taken to pay the rent of boats for the respective fishermen who helped in rescue operations of people affected in the flood.
She directed the Revenue Department officials to identify safe places for the construction of houses for the families of low lying areas in the region.
During the flood, water gushed into 56 schools and six schools were completely submerged.
As many as 224 students have lost their textbooks and other materials. 11 anganwadis also witnessed inflow of water in the centres and three were submerged. Till the flood recedes completely, arrangements will be made for the people to stay in the schools, officials said.
Zilla Panchayat member Jagadish Nayak, Executive Officer Kareem Asadi, Tahsildar Ashok Gurani, and officials of various departments were present on the occasion.
