Udupi: To attract tourists works worth Rs 2 crore are being taken up at the sea walkway of Malpe beach area in Udupi.

The works are likely to be completed by year-end and will be ready to welcome the tourists.

The sea walkway had provided the visitors with a breath-taking view of the beach on one side and River Padukere on the other side, with a view of three islands at the edge of the walkway - St Mary’s Island, Light House Island and Dariagad Island.

Besides, tourists can also see boats entering the docks. The sea walkway is 480-metres-long.

To give more attraction to the seashore, the tourism department had initiated development work in the sea walkway area. The work is
being entrusted to Nirmithi Kendra.

A vast car parking area has been laid on 50,000 square feet area by laying interlocks. At least 200 to 250 cars can be parked at the parking lot.

An open amphitheatre is also being built near the parking area. Around 400 to 500 people can sit at a time in the amphitheatre.

To give a cooling effect in peak summer, clay blocks have been used. The cultural programmes can be organised during weekends and holidays once completed.

The artwork on Jatayu, fishermen and boats entering the sea amid the waves, works reflecting the culture of the coast, will adorn the area.

Granite benches are being laid near the breakwater area, where visitors can enjoy the waves of the sea, along with the sunset.

The work on the food court, shops and toilets near the sea walkway, is also underway.

The works were commenced at the beginning of the lockdown and were expected to be completed by October.

The tourism sector has been hit hard due to Covid-19 pandemic. To attract the tourists, sea walkway is being developed, said Nirmithi Kendra engineer Sachin.
