Udupi: A 26-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze near Mabukala in Brahmavar. The deceased is identified as Ashwini Marakalthi.

Ashwini, daughter of Jalaja, married Purushotthama, a worker in a fishing boat in Malpe, two months ago. She had come to her maternal house in Mabukala for the annual fair in a temple. Ashwini suffered severe burns and died on the way to a Mangaluru hospital.

Police said the area reeked of kerosene. Preliminary investigation revealed that Ashwini had poured kerosene on herself and set herself ablaze.

Ashwini reportedly was under treatment for mental illness and depression made her to take the extreme step.
