Bengaluru:  The state government is planning to hold the winter session of Karnataka assembly in December in Belagavi.

"Our government is willing to hold an assembly session in Belagavi. We will hold it in the month of December," Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai told reporters in Belagavi.

This would be the first assembly session in Belagavi for the BJP government under the leadership of Bommai.

The legislature sessions in Belagavi, a bordering district to Maharashtra, had started in 2006 when BS Yediyurappa was the chief minister. This was done to assert that Belagavi district is an integral part of the state.

In a followup action, the government built Suvarna Vidhana Soudha modelled on the Vidhana Soudha, the state secretariat in Bengaluru.

Maharashtra is laying claim over some areas in Karnataka under the Mahajan Commission recommendations.

Earlier, Bommai held a meeting on Covid situation in Belagavi district. He said the government has taken steps to check Covid and made arrangements for hospital beds, oxygen and pharmaceuticals.

He also directed the officials to take strict action in areas bordering Maharashtra.

Bommai said the government has been successful in controlling Covid in Belagavi as the positivity rate there was low.

He also said at least ten oxygen generation plants will be set up in Gokaka, Chikkodi, Savadatti, Belagavi and other places in the district. All oxygen units will be ready in twenty days, he added.

Bommai said the state has demanded the central government to provide one crore vaccines.

The government has notified the vaccination drive to be taken up in border villages on priority basis, he said and added that in each village, a children's health camp was set up.
