Karwar: The Uttara Kannada district administration has imposed a three-month ban on river-based, coastal and water adventure tourism activities across the district from June 1 to August 31, citing safety concerns during the southwest monsoon season.
The order was issued by Deputy Commissioner and District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Chairperson Lakshmi Priya K under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
According to the administration, heavy rainfall, sudden rise in river levels, flash floods, strong currents, rough sea conditions, high waves and gusty winds during the monsoon pose a serious threat to human life and safety.
The ban covers river rafting, boating in rivers, reservoirs, backwaters and estuaries, as well as water sports such as jet skiing, kayaking, banana rides, parasailing and speedboat rides. Scuba diving and other underwater recreational activities have also been prohibited.
All sea-based tourism, recreational and adventure activities along the Uttara Kannada coast will remain suspended during the period. Any commercial or recreational activity involving public access to rivers, backwaters or sea waters that could endanger lives has also been prohibited.
The district administration has directed all concerned departments to ensure strict implementation of the order and warned that violations would attract action under the Disaster Management Act and other applicable laws.
