Udupi: The arrangements are made and the traditional sand extraction in sand deposits located in CRZ (coastal regulatory zones) can begin by the end of August, said district in-charge minister, Pramod Madhwaraj.

Speaking to media-persons on 16th August, Wednesday at a press conference in Manipal, he said, “It will be an end to the sand shortage problem once this activity commences and it has been ensured that sand is not illegally transported to neighboring districts, which will be the responsibility of several departments including mines and geology, police, revenue, and PWD.”

“A total of 133 permits will be issued for sand extraction in the district and there is room for filling applications even now. Transportation by using big trucks has been restricted as there is risk of such vehicles being used to carry sand to neighboring districts," he added.

Deputy commissioner of the district, Priyanka Mary Francis, was present at the conference.
