Udupi: A memorandum has been submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Udupi by Citizens Action Committee of Hejmady seeking strict action against the shops providing Synthetic rice.

According to the sources, some customers visited the fair price shops at Hejamady in the district after hearing the rumors about ‘plastic rice’ and confirmed that the shop has indeed been providing plastic rice to the ration card holders.

Even though the government had promised to handle the menace of plastic rice strictly, grains of plastic were found in 250 bags of rice supplied by government under 'Anna Bhagya' scheme to Hejamady branch of Padubidri Agricultural Cooperative Society.

In the memorandum submitted to the DC, the committee has urged the Deputy Commissioner to hold departmental inquiry into the continuance of this menace in spite of the government's assurance, and take imperative steps to make sure that this type of rice is not supplied to any of the fair price shops in the state.

A memorandum copy will also be sent to food and civil supplies department minister, U T Khader, urging him to hold investigation and bring out the truth about people who mix plastic granules in rice.

President of Citizens Action Committee Hejamady, Shekhar Hejamady and other villagers from the village were present while handing over the memorandum. An inquiry was immediately ordered by the DC Priyanka Francis to be conducted by food and civil department upon receiving the memorandum.
