Sullia: The accused in the murder of 45-year old Vedavathi, which took place on April 16 this year, was arrested. The accused has been identified as Karunakar (53) .
Vedavathi, wife of farmer Jayaram, was alone at home at the time of the incident.
It is learnt that Karunakar, who happens to be Jayaram's neighbour was in dire need of money. Vedavathi being a relative, had given her gold without Jayaram's knowledge. He mortgaged the gold for money. When the wedding of a close family member approached, Vedavathi demanded her gold back. Unable to get back the gold on time, he decided to murder Vedavathi, sources said.
After committing the murder, Karunakar allegedly tried to destroy all evidences by cleaning the room and also the knife used for the crime and even threw away his mobile phone.
The police who took up the investigation were clueless at first. After questioning several people, they were doubtful of Karunakar and kept a close watch on his movements.
Police sources said that during investigation, Karunakar admitted that he murdered his relative Vedavathi for jewellery. It is also suspected that Karunakar's wife assisted in the murder, as some of the gold was hidden in the house.
More details are expected to be revealed.
