Bhatkal: Members of the Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) of India, Bhatkal unit, held a protest on Tuesday demanding action against those who assaulted Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed, who went missing since 15th October 2016. Following the protest, they submitted a memorandum to the Central government through Bhatkal Assistant Commissioner.

It should be recalled that Najeeb Ahmed, a first-year MSc student at the School of Biotechnology in JNU, reportedly went missing after allegedly being beaten up by some students.

In the memorandum, the members have expressed their condemnation over Delhi SIT team, Crime branch and CBI for still not being able to find Najeeb Ahmed, who is missing for three years now. The memorandum stated that "the case was tried to hide up since the first day of the incident. Along with justice for Najeeb, we want a strict investigation into the assault of Najeeb which took place in the hostel, because no interrogation of assaulters has created a scene of injustice in this case".

They said that since 2016, SIO along with the mother of Najeeb, Fatima Nafees, organized hundreds of protests, rallies, student conferences and public meetings demanding the return of Najeeb and justice for the family. In February 2017, SIO observed a 'Month of Resistance' and collected a million signatures across the nation to pressurize authorities to deliver justice. In 2018, SIO gave a national call for protest especially in central universities to form Najeeb Square. In 2019, a delegation of SIO met with mother of Najeeb at her residence in Badaun, U.P and appealed students and youth community to raise the question #WherelsNajeeb? across the nation on 15th October 2019.

Through the protest, SIO demanded to arrest and investigate the members involved in assaulting Najeeb. They also demanded to assure Najeeb's family members and student community that justice will be done at the earliest.

It shall be noted that the SIO is the students' wing of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind.

On this occasion, SIO Bhatkal president Sanaullah Asadi, Secretary Shuaib SM, Muhammad Talha Siddibapa, Zeorez and many others were present.
