Karwar/Bhatkal: People of North Karnataka were eagerly waiting for the monsoon, but when it finally arrived, their miseries know no bounds.
Most parts of N-K received good rainfall on Tuesday, throwing normal life out of gear. Motorists had to bear the burnt due to water-logging of the roads, most of which are already in a bad shape. While some areas of Dharwad district witnessed heavy rain in the afternoon, moderate rain was recorded in Hubballi city. The cloud cover and sporadic drizzle brought down the temperature in the twin cities.
Uttara Kannada district received 540.1 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours, resulting in submerging of roads and low-lying areas. The district received an average rainfall of 670.7 mm this month against the normal of 698.2 mm.
Karagadde in the Jali Gram Panchayat limits in Bhatkal was flooded on Tuesday. Nawayath Colony and Karagedde Road were water-logged. People urged Bhatkal MLA Mankal Vaidya, ZP president Jaishri Moger and tahsildar V N Baadkar to pay a visit and repair the roads immediately.
While Karwar, Honnavar, Kumta and Ankola received torrential rain, it was moderate in Sirsi, Siddapur, Joida and Haliyal. Several areas were flooded.
In Karwar, students of Saint Joseph’s High School had a tough time as water gushed into their classrooms. Teachers alleged that the school ground was flooded due to the ongoing construction of the medical college behind the school. Water gushed into the school in the absence of a drainage system, said principal Fr John Wilson.
He alleged that neither the deputy commissioner nor the director of Karwar Institute of Medical Sciences (KAiMS) are bothered to solve the problem. “There was no such problem till recently. It all started with the construction of the medical college. Parents are blaming the school for the inconvenience caused to their children. The authorities should take action before something bad happens to the school,” he said.
