Karwar: Karwar City and surrounding areas received heavy rain for the second consecutive day on Tuesday affecting normal life to a large extent. Drainages overflowed and roads and vacant plots were marooned by water.
The rain which began on Monday morning lashed the entire night on Monday and continued on Tuesday. This resulted in water gushing into low-lying areas. Water stood up to two feet above the ground level on the roads of Vijay Nagar in Karwar. The entire area looked like a stream following a heavy downpour.
The new KHB Colony in Karwar was worst hit as people were unable to walk on the roads near the Water tank, State Pollution Control Board office and surrounding areas due to water-logging. The road in that area has huge potholes and these provided an ideal place for the water to settle.
A huge mango tree uprooted at Kajubag disturbing traffic. The movement of vehicles was restored after the staff of fire & emergency services, police and CMC cleared the tree.
Holiday
Deputy Commissioner K Harishkumar has directed the authorities to declare holidays to schools and college on Wednesday depending on the intensity of the rain. He said that the decision must be taken after the Block Education Officer discusses the matter with the tahsildar. He said, now onwards the same system must be followed and later report must be submitted.
Honnavar: The water in the stream at Konar Keri in Karki village in Honnavar taluk flowed above danger level and the water gushed into the nearby fields and plantations. The local people alleged that the situation arose as no provision had been done for rainwater to flow on the NH-66 four-lane.
People also suffered inconvenience at Horesalu, Jadehitlu, Gilmakki keri and surrounding areas in Honnavar taluk. The villagers said water accumulated near Konkan Railway track does not flow properly and this problem arises even in case of light rain. They warned of a protest in case the problem was not solved.
Bhatkal: The rain which lashed entire Monday night in Bhatkal took a break on Tuesday morning. However, at around 5:00 pm, it once again gained momentum. Anticipating heavy rain, Assistant Commissioner Sajid Ahmed Mulla had declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Bhatkal taluk on Tuesday.
A government school in a sorry state in Honnemadi in Bhatkal taluk collapsed on Tuesday. Luckily, no loss of life was reported.
The assistant commissioner visited the rain-affected areas in Bhatkal. He also summoned IRB Company engineer Mallikarjun and asked him to get an earthmoving machine to ensure that the rainwater on the highway flowed smoothly.
The officer said that the administration was even ready to open gruel centres in case the need arises.
Kumta: Following heavy rain for the last two days, Badagani stream flowed up to the brim in Kumta taluk marooning Konalli and other villages in Kumta taluk. As many as 30 families (75 people) in Konalli village, 15 families (23 people) in Urkeri village were taken to the gruel centre on Tuesday in a boat. Water-level in the Aghanashini has also gone up.
A few roads and areas at Heravatta in Kumta town also witnessed water-logging.
Ankola: Agriculture activities in Ankola taluk came to standstill as water has gushed into several fields due to heavy rain for the last three days. Most of the water bodies in the taluk are full and many fields on the banks of these bodies saw water stagnation.
Meanwhile, the weathermen have sounded that the red alert in the coastal areas will continue for another two days.
