Red alert issued in Uttara Kannada till May 27; DC urges public to exercise caution

Karwar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) have issued a red alert for the coastal districts of Karnataka, including Uttara Kannada, from May 24 to May 27. The alert warns of heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h. Deputy Commissioner K. Lakshmi Priya has advised both the public and government officials to take necessary precautions during this period.

A low-pressure area has formed over the Arabian Sea, increasing the likelihood of strong winds and heavy rainfall across the district. In response, the District Disaster Management Authority has issued several precautionary instructions. A high tide alert has been sounded for the coastal belt stretching from Majali to Bhatkal, with wave heights expected to reach 2.7 to 3.3 meters on May 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Marine operations have been suspended, and fishermen have been strictly warned not to venture into the sea. People are also advised not to enter water bodies during this period.

The district administration has established a 24/7 Emergency Operations Center at the Deputy Commissioner’s office. Citizens are encouraged to monitor official updates through social media handles and newspapers and are urged not to share or believe unauthorized information. Residents, especially children, are advised to stay away from low-lying areas, riverbanks, and beaches. Tourists and the general public must strictly avoid entering the sea or any water bodies.

Farmers have been advised to postpone agricultural activities during periods of rain and lightning. The public, including children and workers, should avoid staying outdoors during rainfall and take shelter in safe structures. People are also cautioned against standing near trees, electric poles, or live wires, and should stay away from weak or old buildings that might collapse. In case of heavy rain or thunderstorms, all safety protocols must be followed strictly, and those in vulnerable areas are encouraged to stay at nearby relief centres, if necessary.

Residents living in low-lying or flood-prone areas, or near dilapidated structures, should move to safer locations immediately. Extra caution is advised while crossing narrow bridges or culverts, particularly in rural areas. In case of emergencies or sightings of damaged buildings or walls, citizens may contact the 24/7 control room at 08382-229857 or send a message via WhatsApp to 9483511015.

Deputy Commissioner Lakshmi Priya has appealed to the people of Uttara Kannada to stay safe, remain alert, and fully cooperate with authorities during this critical weather situation.
