Rapist gets 3 years imprisonment in Karwar

Karwar: Principal District & Sessions Court here has sentenced an accused to three years imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 21,000 on him for raping, assaulting, and threatening to kill a minor girl.

Govind Chipagaonkar, a resident of Ramanaguli in Ankola taluk, is the convict. A case under POCSO Act was registered against him.

According to the complaint, accused Govind sneaked into the house of the victim on July 17, 2014, and tried to get closer to the mentally-retarded sister of the survivor. When the survivor intervened to rescue her sister, he assaulted her physically and verbally. Later, he raped her and threatened to kill her.

Registering a complaint, Ankola Station investigating officer Ganesh M Hegde had arrested the accused and produced him before the court. Principal District Judge Vipula M B Pujari pronounce the verdict after hearing the case.

In the verdict, the judge ordered to give Rs 15,000 of the fine amount to the victim as compensation.

The judge also ordered the District Legal Services Authority to provide Rs 25,000 as compensation to the girl.

Special public prosecutor (POCSO) Subhash Kairanna argued the case.
