Karwar: Property worth Rs 662.43 crore has been damaged in the recent floods that ravaged many parts of Uttara Kannada district. A final report on the damage to property prepared by various departments was submitted to the district administration on Thursday.
The maximum damage was reported to the infrastructure coming under the Public Works Department (PWD) including major roads and bridges. The loss they claimed stood at Rs 273.68 crore. The Panchayatraj Engineering Department incurred property loss of Rs 74.93 crore. As many as 271 bridges coming under both the departments have damaged to a large extent causing loss of Rs 98.24 crore. This was mentioned in the report submitted to the district administration.
Roads of total 1,691 km length coming under various departments were washed away in the flood. This includes 150 km State highway, 1,459 km rural roads, 30 km urban development department roads and 51 km roads of the fisheries department. This caused a compound loss of Rs 191.45 crore, the report adds.
4 dead
As many as four people died in the flood and of them, Rs 5 lakh compensation each has been given to the kin of three victims. One application submitted seeking compensation has been rejected. Around 128 livestock heads died in the flood and their owners have incurred a total loss of Rs 29.81 lakh. Already, compensation of Rs 16.18 lakh has been given to 59 livestock owners.
As rivers Kali, Aghanashini, Gangavali and other streams overflowed, 113 villages were inundated. Around 9,013 people caught in the flood water were rescued and 183 boats were used for this purpose.
As many as 134 temporary relief centres were opened across the district and they worked for an average of four days. Around 16,390 people took shelter there, the maximum being in Karwar taluk (6,050 people) followed by Ankola taluk (4,567 people), the final report said.
248 houses collapse
As many as 248 houses collapsed in the district causing loss of Rs 915 crore. 283 houses were extensively damaged causing loss of Rs 47.1 crore and 1,718 houses were partially damaged with loss of Rs 54.9 crore. This amounts to total loss of Rs 193.8 crore. Till now, compensation of Rs 25.1 crore has been given.
Compensation
Till now, Rs 10,000 temporary relief each has been given by the government to 6,858 families worth Rs 68.5 crore.
