Sirsi: Residents of Ajjarani in the taluk gheraoed BJP candidate from Yellapur assembly constituency Shivaram Hebbar and not allowed him to deliver a speech as part of the election campaign in their village.
Soon after the arrival of Hebbar into their village, the villagers said, "when you were in Congress, you were criticising the BJP all the time, then how come you joined that party? If you were in Congress, we would have supported you. But, you have left the Congress for your personal gains. Why should we vote you in the coming by-polls?", they questioned.
According to sources, some BJP party workers confronted Hebbar and said, you (Hebbar) are the reason for the defeat of BJP in the last assembly polls and our party candidate faced a setback. However, now, you are only contesting the polls on the BJP ticket, they added.
When the verbal dual between both the Congress and BJP workers reached its peak, Hebbar tried to convince them. But when he failed the bid, he boarded his vehicle and returned.
The video of which went viral on social media sites has now become a weapon for his opponents.
After this incident, when MLA R V Deshpande was returning from his campaign at Ramapur in the taluk on Tuesday morning, some party workers of the BJP gheraoed him and raised slogans in favour of Hebbar.
When the verbal dual between party workers of both the Congress and BJP reached its peak, police intervened and managed them smoothly.
