Karwar: “As sources of water have come down drastically in the past few years, the need of the hour is to create awareness among the people to use water in a controlled manner,” said Principal District & Sessions Judge T G Shivashankaregowda.
Speaking at a legal literacy programme organised in Karwar on Friday on account of World Water Day, Shivashankaregowda said that man was destroying the environment by polluting it in the name of globalisation and urbanisation. As forests were used by man to fulfil his selfish needs, water sources were getting dried off and rivers were losing their native form.
“In recent days, even the water in the well situated in front of houses were getting polluted and hence, top-most priority had to be given to saving rivers and lakes which can in turn save our lives. Water must be used in limited quantities and must be saved for future use,” he said.
Deputy Commissioner K Harishkumar said that dialogue on saving water must not be held only on World Water Day. It must go on throughout the year. He advised youths to use their strength to initiate creative and environmental conservation work in society.
He called upon youths to make voluntary efforts to educate people on environmental issues.
