Karwar: The rising price of onions has not only affected common man but also restaurants and hotels in Karwar City.
For the last four to five days, a person has to cuff up Rs 150 to buy just one kilogram of onions in Karwar. To cope with the rising cost of onion, several hotels have literally stopped using onions in their dishes.
The prices of onions began shooting up nearly a month back. Then itself, some hotels had excluded ‘Onion Bajji’ and ‘Onion Uttappa’ from the menu. But after the price rose to Rs 100 per kg, onions have been left out from the list of vegetable items ordered by hotels.
Presently, many hotels of Karwar are serving Pav Bhaji, chaats like Paani Puri, Masala Puri, Sambar and other dishes without onions. As a result, there is a difference in the taste and so, customers complaining about it has also become common.
“We need 25 kg of onion in our hotel every day. Going by the present price, we have to spend Rs 7,500 to buy a bag of 50 kg onions which means that we have to spend more than our financial limits to buy one ingredient. Also, we cannot transfer the burden of the price on to the customers. Keeping all these calculations in mind, we have stopped purchasing onions for the time being. We plan to restart dishes with onion only after the prices come down,” said a staff member of a hotel on Green Street in Karwar.
