Bengaluru: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday said the Karnataka government will not compromise on the Mekedattu drinking water project .

Speaking to newsmen here at his residence, he said Tamil Nadu was making the Mekedattu issue a political one.
Any party who comes to power in Tamil Nadu opposes mekedattu project . "We all know about cauvery water sharing issue and how the neighbouring states behave," he said.

"I have already met Union Irrigation Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. Centre will give permission as soon as possible. I am confident that the DPR will be cleared early and once everything is clear the project work will go ahead," he said.

On this issue, despite opposition, the Karnataka government is committed to complete the project he said. Tamil Nadu BJP Annamalai who opposed the Mekedatu project, said he would fast on August 5.

Mekedatu is a multipurpose (drinking and power) project, which involves building a balancing reservoir, near Kanakapura in Ramanagara district.

Tamil Nadu has been vehemently opposing it, raising apprehensions that the state will be affected if the project takes shape.

The project once completed is aimed at ensuring drinking water to Bengaluru and neighbouring areas (4.75 TMC) and also can generate 400 MW power. The estimated cost is Rs 9,000 crore.
