Udupi: Udupi police and Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrested two men who were fleeing with Rs 22 lakh in cash that had been stolen from their former employer’s house in Udupi on Friday night.

The men arrested in Madgaon, Goa, were identified as Atul Bagne and Sandeep Chandrakanth Shindhe. They had decamped with Rs 22 lakh kept in the grocery boxes in the kitchen in Sunanda Manikya Patil’s house.

The police team left for Madgaon on Friday and nabbed the duo. The men confessed that they had booked a room in a lodge in Udupi two days before the burglary. They had entered the house when Sunanda left to visit her children in the school on Thursday afternoon.

The arrested men had already spent Rs 15,500 and the remaining amount of about Rs 21.8 lakh in was recovered by police, along with half a kg silver ornaments worth Rs 30,000.

Sunanda had suspected that Atul Bagne (24), a resident of Sangli in Maharashtra and a relative of her husband, and his accomplice to have stolen the money.

The arrested were produced before the court and remanded in three days of police custody on Saturday.
