Mangaluru: Mangaluru City Corporation carried out a raid against unauthorised petty shops and street vendors in Kavoor on the city’s outskirts on Monday.

The officials arrived at 6.30 am and more than 15 unauthorised petty shops and street vendors were evicted with the help of police.

A woman vented out her anger at MCC officials and said they were only eking out a living by selling products beside the road.

“We were asked to shift to Kavoor market. But, we are being asked to pay in thousands to shift to the market. We are poor and unable to pay such a huge amount of money,” said the woman vendor, while expressing her helplessness.

The officials, in turn, claimed that they were following the direction of the MCC commissioner.

The street vendors and petty shop owners staged a protest on the occasion.

A member of street vendors’ committee, B K Imthiyaz said, “The drive to clear the petty shops is a violation of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014.”

The street vendors, especially women, faced many inconveniences with the drive initiated by the MCC. Many had been carrying out their business for the past several years, he added.
