Mangaluru: Sand lorry runs over two-wheeler, rider killed

Mangaluru: A motorcyclist was killed and pillion rider injured when a multi-axle truck transporting M-Sand to Kerala rammed a two-wheeler at Padekallu, near Muguli, in Karopadi under Vittal Police Station jurisdiction on Sunday.

The deceased is Sayyed Anwar (24) from Muguli, while the injured pillion rider is Nawabu (20), a resident of Bekooru in Kerala. Nawabu was shifted to a private hospital in Deralakatte.

Anwar, along with Nawabu was on his way to attend a wedding of his cousin in Patrakodi.

The truck transporting M-sand was plying from Kanyana towards Kerala. At a dangerous curve, the driver lost control over the truck knocked down the two-wheeler and ran over the rider. 

Post the incident, the lorry driver fled the spot.As news began to spread, a large number of people gathered at the spot and expressed displeasure at police and threw stones at the lorry and punctured its tyres.

The protesters claimed that heavy vehicles were prohibited from travelling on Kanyana-Bayaru Road. Unfortunately, hundreds of lorries laden with M-Sand and sand ply on the stretch daily, they added.

Several mishaps have occurred on the stretch for the last six months. The police department has neglected the issue.

Bantwal police station Inspector T D Nagaraj and his staff rushed to the spot.

The protesters withdrew their protest after police promised action against heavy vehicles plying on the stretch.
