Mangaluru: A Sessions court judge severely reprimanded police after witnessing an unusual spectacle of an elderly man being carried to the court hall in a stretcher.

The Judge took the police to task questioning the urgency on producing a sick bed-ridden elderly man in the court. The elderly man identified as Mohammed from Addur was allegedly involved in murder and rioting cases in Bajpe police station limits, years ago. Mohammed, who eked out a living as a bus driver, was married four times.

Yet, all his wives had deserted him when he was bed-ridden. When Asif Apathbhandava of Maimuna Foundation came to know about Mohammed’s pathetic condition, he had shifted the elderly man to his Apathbandhava Psycho Rehabilitation Centre in Mulki, three months ago. As has been the practice, Asif informed local Mulki police about the Ashram’s new inmate, Mohammed.

Soon, Bajpe police issued a warrant directing Asif to produce Mohammed before the court on August 12. The pleas of Asif fell on dead ears and left with no option, Asif had arrived at the district court complex carrying Mohammed in an ambulance. Witnessing Mohammed lying on the stretcher not only left the judge angry but also moved an advocate to tears.

The young advocate Farooq told Asif that he will take up Mohammed’s case free of cost. Later, Asif and Mohammed returned to Ashram in the ambulance, said sources.
