Selfie craze puts youths into trouble at a beach in Mangaluru; gets saved from expert swimmers

Mangaluru: A tragedy was averted here at Suratkal beach, when two Bengaluru based youngsters who had come to city were saved from drowning on 26th June, Monday.

The cause for this incident was their craze for selfie. The youngsters from K R Puram, Bengaluru were travelling along with five other friends, arrived at the beach as part of their visit to Dakshina Kannada district.

They entered the beach near NITK Suratkal on 26th June, Monday morning and the two youngsters climbed a rock in the sea and began to click pictures from their cell phones.

During this, the heavy tides started rising as a result of the volatile weather and both the youngsters started to panic after finding themselves in trouble. One of th saved his life by jumping into the sea and swimming to the shore when the tides subsided.

The other one anyhow was scared to do the same and started to yell for help. No one was present at the beach except the youngsters.

Luckily, seven swimmers from Home Guard department, who had come to Sasihitlu the previous day for rescue operation, happened to pass by at the beach. They heard the screams and rushed forward to help the youngster.

They were able to successfully bring him to the shore with the help of some ropes. Later, Mangaluru Tahasildar Mahadevappa visited the spot and appreciated the Home Guard swimmers for help rendered.
