Mangaluru: Senior Congress leader and Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) B.K. Hariprasad has voiced concern over the growing atmosphere of fear and distrust in Dakshina Kannada, urging swift action against those inciting communal discord and manipulating others to create unrest.
Speaking to the media in Mangaluru, Hariprasad remarked, “Mangaluru has earned a good name across the state and the country. We must not let it become like Manipur. While peace is prevailing in the rest of Karnataka, we must ask why such situations are arising in the coastal region.”
Referring to recent targeted killings and the resignation of a Congress Muslim leader, he said those directly involved in such acts are merely the visible actors. “The real masterminds — the ones pulling the strings — are still at large. Our people are losing their lives while these hidden figures remain untouched,” he said.
However, he expressed optimism, noting that competent officers are now in charge and that the key figures behind these incidents would soon be identified. “Give it a few days, and we will name the masterminds,” he stated confidently.
Addressing concerns within his own party, Hariprasad emphasized that the Congress is not ready to lose any leader. “I will personally speak to all those affected. The resignations came from an emotional place, not political disagreement. I urge everyone to withdraw them,” he appealed.
When asked about his recent meeting with the Chief Minister, Hariprasad described it as a courtesy visit but confirmed that discussions included the recent killings and growing tensions. “The Chief Minister has assured that necessary steps will be taken. He has also asked our party workers to reach out to the public and help restore normalcy,” he added.
Hariprasad later attended a meeting with religious scholars under the banner of Ulama Coordination Committee – Karnataka at Jamiatul Falah Hall in Kankanady, where concerns were raised about the region’s deteriorating environment of interfaith trust.
“This is a district known for communal harmony, where 99% of the population lives together in mutual respect and trust. But certain elements are trying to disturb that balance. We must be vigilant and act against those who are encouraging division and mistrust,” Hariprasad said.
He emphasized that identifying and stopping the instigators — not just the direct actors — is critical. “There is no use in only targeting those who carry out the acts. We must apprehend the ones provoking them,” he added.
He also pledged to convey the memorandum submitted by the scholars to the Chief Minister and ensure it is discussed at the highest level.
The meeting saw participation from prominent figures including Syed Ismail Tanjal Madani, T.M. Muhiyuddin Kamil Sakhafi, M.P.M. Ashraf Saadi Mallur, K.M. Usmanul Faizi Todar, Abdul Hameed Darimi Sampya, and others. The contents of the community memorandum were presented by Dr. M.S.M. Abdur Rashid Zani Kamil Sakhafi and Anees Kausari, with a preface by N.K.M. Shafi Saadi.
Wrapping up, Hariprasad urged party workers and the broader community to stay committed to justice, peace, and constitutional values. “We are on the side of the Constitution and the law. Do not lose heart — we are here to uphold harmony and justice,” he affirmed.
