Mangaluru: A case was filed against a doctor of a private hospital for alleged negligence while conducting a delivery, on Friday. Shruti Suvara, 24, died at Gandhi Hospital on June 7. She was admitted to the hospital a day earlier after having reached her full term of pregnancy. Gynecologist Dr Chaayalatha, was treating her.

According to the police, Shruti was given an injection to induce labour pain. When the doctor was not able to effect a natural delivery through this process, she resorted to a Caesarean operation and brought the child stuck midway, out. In doing so, the doctor is said to have cut the blood nerve of the patient.

When the bleeding did not stop, Dr Chayalatha asked her mother Geetha Poojary to arrange for blood.

When her condition further deteriorated, she was shifted to Kasturi Medical College, Manipal. However, Shruti did not respond to the treatment and passed away. Incidentally, the issue created ripples on social media with her friends lambasting the doctor for negligence. Kanni Rajan in one such Facebook post claimed that this was the fourth such incident involving Dr Chayalatha and that no action has been taken against her. "How can a doctor whom we trust so much to save our lives be so negligent," he wondered.

Based on a complaint from Geetha, a case has been registered in Udupi Town Police Station under section 304 (A) of IPC.
