Mangaluru: Police and officials from the Mines and Geology, the Public Works and Revenue Departments on Monday seized 1,300 truckloads of sand, stocked illegally, in different places under the Bajpe police station limits.
The police said that on a tip-off the team raided sites in Margadangadi Muthoor, Kuppepadavu, Ganjimatha, Mura Suralpady and Kandavara on Monday morning.
The police said the sand dumped at the sites were part of the sand that was extracted from the Phalguni bed by agencies authorised by the Public Works Department (PWD).
Instead of dumping the extracted sand at the yard of the PWD in Ganjimath, the transporters reportedly dumped a part of the sand at different places.
The police said the illegally stocked sand was seized and personnel were posted to guard it. The PWD will initiate further action, the police said. While the police team was led by Police Inspector T.D. Nagaraj, the Mines and Geology Department personnel team was led by scientist Moorthy.
PWD Subdivisional Officer Rathnakar and village accountants were also part of the team that raided places that had stocked sand illegally.
