Karwar:The number of 156 liquor shops in the district is likely to drop till 104 after the end of this month.
The SC has ordered shifting all liquor shop located within 500 meters from national highway in urban areas and 220 mts in rural areas.
But owners of 71 shops near the state highway are likely to escape. However, 52 shops across national highway will have to shift the shop, says Excise Department.
"A total of 52 shops near National Highway need to be shifted. As the State goverment has already denotified 55.96 km State highway in district's town panchayat and muncipal coperation limits, 71 shops will continue to function as usual. Licences of 104 liquor shop will be renewed for excise new year which begins on July 1" says Excise police Deputy Superintendent Manjunath Areguli.
The goverment has denotified total 55.96 km of state highways in town panchayat and municipal coperation limits including 1.9 kms in Bhatkal in the district,14.86 kms in Sirsi, 6.45kms in Mundagod, 5.24 kms in Yellapur, 4.6 kms in Haliyal, 1.6 kms in Honnavar, 3.2kms in Karwar, 3.6 kms in Kumta, 10.4 kms in Siddapur and 4.06 kms in Dandeli.
