Lightning strike kills pregnant lady, injures two in Bhatkal

Bhatkal: A woman was killed while two others were injured when lightning struck a house in Madina colony, Firdose nagar, Bhatkal. The incident occured in the early hours of Monday. 

The deceased was identified as Bibi Sufiya D/o Amanullah Khan (22). Mubarak Khan (19) and Muhammed Kaif (6) were identified as injured.

Narrating the tragedy, Amanullah Khan said all of them were in their house when heavy rains accompanied by thunder lashed the region at around 5:00 am. His daughter Bibi Sufiya and sons were sleeping inside the house when lightning struck, killing Bi Bi Sufiya on the spot. 

The impact was so strong that the roof of the house was blown away while household appliances and the electric meter were badly damaged.

The deceased Bibi Sufiya had been recently married Zakir Khan, who hails from Shikairpur in Shimoga district. Sufiya was six weeks pregnant. 

"My daughter and her husband were happily settled in Shikaripur and had arrived in Bhatkal just a day ago. Zakir left for Shikaripur on Sunday and my daughter stayed here with us. Who would have thought he would lose her forever," lamented Amanullah.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the house once they heard about the incident. Bhatkal rural police also rushed to the spot and a case was registered.

Bhatkal and surrounding regions received moderate rainfall making this the second shower this summer. Temperatures reached a high of 38 degrees celsius before cooling down after the shower on Monday.
